If you run a plumbing, electrical, HVAC or building business in Australia, the shortlist for job management software usually comes down to three names. ServiceM8 vs Tradify vs Simpro is a question owners ask when the whiteboard, the diary and the spreadsheet stop keeping up. All three handle quotes, scheduling, job cards and invoices. They differ in who they are built for, how they charge and how far they can be connected to the rest of your business.
ServiceM8 suits service businesses doing many shorter jobs, because it prices by jobs per month rather than per user. Tradify suits sole traders and small teams who want a simple per-user system. Simpro suits larger or multi-trade contractors who need projects, inventory and assets, and can invest in a quoted, longer setup.
This guide compares the three side by side, explains when each fits, shows how each connects to Xero and MYOB, and gives a six-step process for choosing. Product details and prices change often, so the comparison describes how each vendor prices and integrates as published on their own websites in October 2026; confirm current plans with the vendor before you sign up.
What is job management software for tradies?
Job management software is a system that tracks a trade job from first enquiry to paid invoice in one place, shared between the office and the people on the tools. It is sometimes called field service management software. A typical job flows through these stages:
- Enquiry and quote. Capture the customer's details, price the work from your price list and send a quote they can accept online.
- Scheduling and dispatch. Put the job in the calendar, assign a tech and send the customer a confirmation.
- On site. Job notes, photos, forms, checklists, materials used and time on the job, recorded on a phone or tablet.
- Invoice and payment. Turn the completed job into an invoice, take payment and pass it to your accounting software.
Without it, the same job details are typed into a diary, a quote template, a text message and an invoice. That double entry is where the missed follow-ups, lost job sheets and late invoices come from. Our trades and home services page covers the most common gaps we see.
ServiceM8 vs Tradify vs Simpro at a glance
The table summarises how the three compare, based on each vendor's published pricing pages, feature pages and help articles. "Typical fit" is our own guide to where each product is usually strongest, not a rule.
| ServiceM8 | Tradify | Simpro | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical fit | Service and maintenance businesses with many shorter jobs | Sole traders and small teams | Larger, multi-trade or project-based contractors |
| How pricing works | Monthly plans based on jobs per month; a free plan for one user, and unlimited users on paid plans | Per user, per month, with monthly or annual billing | Quoted for your team size and add-ons, plus a setup fee for onboarding, training and data migration |
| Trying it first | Free plan | 14-day free trial, no credit card | Demo with the vendor |
| Mobile apps | iOS and Android | iPhone, Android, tablet and desktop | Mobile app for field staff |
| Accounting integrations | Xero, MYOB (AccountRight and Essentials), QuickBooks Online | Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks Online | Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks, Sage |
| Connecting other tools | Add-ons plus a documented developer API with webhooks | Focused on accounting and payments; check the integration list for anything else | Integration marketplace and an open API |
The pricing model is often the deciding factor. A business with four techs doing dozens of short call-outs a week pays very differently under a per-job model than under a per-user model, and the cheaper option flips as the team or the job volume grows. Run both against your own numbers.
When is ServiceM8 the right choice?
ServiceM8 is a job management app built around the job card, with a strong focus on the phone in the tech's hand. It works well for:
- Service, maintenance and call-out work where jobs are short and frequent, such as plumbing, electrical, locksmiths, pest control and cleaning.
- Growing teams who do not want to pay more every time they add a tech, because paid plans include unlimited users.
- Businesses that want to connect other systems, because ServiceM8 publishes a developer API with webhooks that automation platforms and developers can build on.
Watch for: because plans are tied to job volume, a busy month or a lot of small jobs can push you into a higher plan. It is also lighter than Simpro for long construction projects with stages, variations and progress claims.
When is Tradify the right choice?
Tradify is job management software designed for small trade businesses, with quoting, scheduling, timesheets, job costing and invoicing in a simple interface. It works well for:
- Sole traders and small crews who want to be set up and quoting quickly without a long implementation.
- Owners who value simplicity over configuration, and want the office and the tools on the same page.
- Xero users, because Tradify describes a two-way Xero integration where payments reconciled in Xero can mark the matching Tradify invoice as paid.
Watch for: per-user pricing means the monthly bill rises with every person you add. If you rely on tools outside accounting and payments, such as a CRM, a phone system or a marketing platform, check Tradify's integration list for each one before you commit, because connecting them may need a workaround.
When is Simpro the right choice?
Simpro is field service and project management software aimed at established contractors, with deeper features for projects, inventory, assets and reporting. It works well for:
- Larger and multi-trade businesses in electrical, HVAC, plumbing, security and fire protection, where several teams and an office need detailed control.
- Project work with stages, materials tracking, supplier quotes and recurring maintenance on customer assets.
- Businesses that report closely on job profitability, stock and team utilisation.
Watch for: Simpro's pricing is tailored to team size and add-ons and includes an initial setup fee, so you need a quote to compare it. Treat implementation as a project, with time set aside for configuration, training and data migration. For a two-person business, it is often more system than you need.
How do ServiceM8, Tradify and Simpro connect to Xero and MYOB?
All three connect to the accounting packages most Australian trade businesses use, but they differ in what syncs and in which direction. ServiceM8 lists Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks Online as supported packages, and syncs clients, items, invoices and payments with Xero and MYOB. Tradify syncs invoices, bills, payments and contacts. Simpro lists Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks and Sage.
Before you switch on any accounting sync, sit down with your bookkeeper and check:
- GST and account codes. Make sure items and labour in the job system map to the right tax rates and accounts.
- Which system is the source of truth for customers and items, so you do not create duplicates in both.
- How payments flow back. Know whether a payment recorded in Xero or MYOB updates the job system, or only the other way round.
- Record keeping. The ATO generally requires business records to be kept for five years, and recommends downloading a full copy of cloud records before changing providers. Its record-keeping rules for business are worth reading before any migration.
How to choose job management software in 6 steps
- Map how a job moves today. Write down every step from phone call to paid invoice, who does it and where the details are typed. The steps with double entry are what the new system must fix.
- Count jobs and people. Take your average jobs per month and the number of people who need a login. This tells you whether per-job or per-user pricing works out cheaper.
- List the systems it must connect to. Accounting first, then anything else you rely on: supplier price lists, phone system, calendar, CRM, website forms and review requests.
- Trial with real jobs. Use ServiceM8's free plan, Tradify's free trial or a Simpro demo to run a week of real quotes and jobs, with at least one tech using the mobile app on site.
- Check data in and out. Ask how customers, price lists and open jobs get imported, and how you would export your records if you ever leave.
- Decide who owns the setup. Someone needs to configure templates, price lists, job statuses and the accounting sync. Agree whether that is you, your office manager, the vendor's onboarding team or an outside specialist.
Which is best for sole traders, small teams and larger contractors?
- Sole trader: start with Tradify or ServiceM8. Trial both; pick the one whose quoting and invoicing feel quicker for your trade.
- Small team of 2 to 10 doing service work: compare ServiceM8's job-based pricing with Tradify's per-user pricing at your real volume. If you plan to automate around the system, weigh ServiceM8's developer API.
- Established or multi-trade contractor: shortlist Simpro, and get a quote that includes setup, training and the add-ons you actually need.
Does job management software replace your other systems?
Rarely. Even the best job management system leaves gaps: quotes that go quiet, enquiries arriving by text and email, customer records split between systems, and reports pulled together by hand. You do not always need a new platform to close them. Often the cheaper fix is to connect the software you already have.
For example, our Greenline Plumbing case study shows ServiceM8, Xero and a separate customer system connected so completed jobs create invoices and payments reconcile without retyping. Our guide to quote follow-up for tradies covers what ServiceM8, Tradify and Simpro can chase automatically and where a connected workflow takes over. When the gap sits between systems, systems integration links them so each job is entered once.
